SISTERHOOD.
Project Type
Photography
Date
July 2023
Location
Bangkok, Thailand.
Role
Photographer and Project Owner.
“SISTERHOOD” is a photo diary consisting of nine photos that shows the relationship between myself and my younger sister, a 9-year-old girl named Kaow-Hom. It is inspired by Alexey Titarenko’s photos with his view of “time”. I aimed to employ longer shutter speeds to capture more time and movement. Furthermore, the idea of time is combined with an exploration of the themes of “youth” and “energy” I can observe from a younger person. The written notes in the photo diary are influenced by Jim Goldberg since it allows my sister to use narrative writing styles and/or visual language to express her thoughts.
This project aims to portray the special connection, relationship and love between sisters before I have to move abroad for a few years and be far away from one of the family members I am really close to. I want this series of images to serve as a reminder to my sister and myself. Especially when we reunite in the future, look at the photos we made and reminisce about our ordinary but unforgettable times because she would never be nine years old again. It is also because I am going to miss some moments in her life and cannot ask her to participate in this project anymore because we live in different countries – that is why I brought the concepts of “youth”, “energy”, and “time” together.
The photo diary utilises self-portraiture techniques on bulb mode through the mechanical shutter release and a tripod on my manual film camera, Nikon FA. The written components are narrative styles for my sister to write and/or draw whatever she wants, just like a diary.
